Festival of Science & Curiosity 2024

Well, it’s certainly been a few months, but I’m back to updating this site a bit more regularly now. I’ll have a few posts I’ll be putting together to catch people up on what’s been happening recently! But this post is about the talk that I gave for the Festival of Science and Curiosity at Wollaton Hall in February, Ichthyosaurs!

I was asked to run an hour long session for the event, which although it looked like a long time on paper, it certainly went quickly in person! I managed to squeeze in a good amount of information to give a quick crash course on ichthyosaurs without overwhelming everyone with information, and it seemed well received! There were plenty of questions asked and no-one fell asleep, so I see it as a success.

I’d brought along some fossils from my own collection, so after the main talk was finished, it was time for some hands on experience! The kids guessed what fossil belonged to which animal and did really well, and got some handling experience as part of it. I really hope that they went away with an interest in the subject like I did at that age when I would go to similar events! The museum were also very helpful in lending some specimens from the handling collection to aid my talk, so a big thanks to Sue and Adam, especially for the ichthyosaur material!

In the end, it was a really great time and I really enjoyed sharing my knowledge and inspiring people to have an interest in these amazing marine reptiles, not just in dinosaurs. I’d like to give a big thanks to everyone involved and I look forward to giving similar talks in the future! In the meantime, I’ll keep to studying them, and be happy I’ve got a photo next to a model ichthyosaur! It’s the closest I’ll get to petting the real animal anyway.
